What difference do our organisations make to the people in our community? We are often asked to demonstrate our social impact in funding bids and tender documents, but how often do we think about how it makes the people we are serving feel?

During Firestarter Festival we are inviting organisations to come along with a customer, employee, service user, volunteer or anyone who their work is intended to help as we investigate the good we are doing in Dundee. Founder of Uppertunity Danielle Gaffney Du Plooy is facilitating this event for us making it fully inclusive.

If you are thinking of starting an enterprise, this event will really make you think about your impact in a new way – come along even if you don’t have anyone to bring with you yet!

The outcome of this event, as well as food for thought and a renewed sense of purpose, will be a community mural which will be displayed in The Circle.

About Danielle

Hi, my name is Danielle and I am the manager, founder and director at Uppertunity. Uppertunity is a community interest company providing a personal development service for adults with additional needs and learning disabilities. I set up Uppertunity in 2015 with the belief that everyone, no matter their ability or background, has something beautiful to offer this world. As well as managing and growing Uppertunity, I am also completing my honours year at Abertay in Psychology and Counselling and have completed an HND in Contemporary Art. I strongly believe in the power of creativity and use it frequently in my professional life as well as in my personal life. Life can sometimes be daunting and crazy, but this is what makes life worth living. Leaving my home, South Africa, at the age of 18 to go work abroad with only £50 taught me that anything can be achieved if we believe in ourselves. It also helps if someone else believes in you too. That’s why Uppertunity came to be. Sometimes we forget or worse, don’t even realise our potential, and that is when we need someone to help us along the way.

This event is part of the Fire Starter Festival 2019. The Fire Starter Festival is an annual festival highlighting and celebrating innovation and creativity in Scottish public services, with a particular focus on transformational change. The Festival is curated and organised by Scottish Government, with events hosted by a broad range of public sector, third sector and community organisations. In 2019 it will run between 28 January – 8 February.
